| Founded in 1262 as the original site for the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Rai’s importance waned when 34 years later the king transferred the power to Chiang Mai. Today the town
still lies in the bowl of the surrounding mountains, and although still not as important as her sister Mai, is the fastest growing town in Thailand and has become the second home for wealthy industrialists and their ilk, who appreciate the scenic beauty and use it’s location as base for their trekking vacations.

Hill Tribe Museum – Established in 1990, this small museum works to inform tourists about the predicament of the hill-tribe people, and to raise awareness of AIDS as well.
Overbrook Hospital - Typical of the colonial architecture of the late 19th and early 20th century, this hospital is still functioning.
Wats (Temples) – The lavishly decorated buildings of some of the most holy temples in the land draw visitors to this ancient town.
